Onam is a Hindu festival, which is celebrated in Kerala very joyously.
This festival is celebrated in the memory of Vamana avatar Vishnu. Onam is
celebrated in the month of August and September for 10 days. This festival is
celebrated by flower carpet, grand lunch, snake boat race, Pulikali,
Kaikottikkali etc.
Onam is celebrated as the visit of god Vishnu every year.
This day, a grand feast is prepared called Onasadya. This feast is a 9 course
meal with 11 to 13 essential dishes. Feast is served on the banana leaves and
people sit on floor mats. During this festival, as a tradition, a game
Onakalikal is played.
Men play rigorous sports like Talappanthukali, Ambeyyal
Kutukutu and fights called Kayyankali and Attakalam. Women is indulge in
different cultural activities like flower mat designing known as Pookalam (in
front of their courtyard) and dance performances like Kaikotti Kali and Thumbi
Thullal. Folks also perform Kummatti Kali and Pulikali.
